TSB 062: Love Your Cause But Annoyed By Your Team? Let's Fix It.
Mar 09, 2024Michael was not getting any sleep. His Senior Leadership Team was not getting along, not delivering on the mission, and the numbers told the story.
His department heads seem more focused on their own fiefdoms than the well-being of the staff or the clients they serve. He felt like he was walking a tightrope. Things had to change and he's not alone.
So, what's the crux of the problem? Often, departmental leaders get siloed. They become laser-focused on their metrics and goals, forgetting they're just one piece of a much bigger puzzle. This tunnel vision can lead to competition between departments, creating a tense and unproductive work environment for everyone.
Why does this happen? Sometimes, it's unintentional. Leaders get caught up in the day-to-day grind, losing sight of the big picture. Other times, it can be a power play – a desperate attempt to feel important within the organization.
The usual approach? Crack the whip! Lay down the law and remind everyone of the mission. While this might get temporary results, it can breed resentment and stifle creativity. There's a better way.
Here's how we can address this positively:
- Open Communication: Foster a culture of open communication. Encourage regular meetings where department heads can share their challenges and successes, fostering collaboration.
- Shared Goals: Don't just talk mission, translate it into action. Set clear, shared goals that bridge departmental divides. This gets everyone working towards the same objective.
- Celebrate Together: Recognition is key. Celebrate wins, big and small, across all departments. This reinforces the "we're in this together" mentality.
- Invest in Leadership Development: Empower your leaders! Provide training on effective communication, collaboration, and fostering a positive work environment. This equips them to lead by example.
A motivated and supported team is the backbone of any successful nonprofit. By fostering collaboration and a shared sense of purpose, you can turn your department heads from solo performers into an orchestra, creating beautiful music that advances your mission and makes a real difference.
Now Michael can get some rest.
That's all for today. I'll see you again next Saturday!
